“The bishop is neither the self-sufficient controlling father, nor the fearful and isolated lonely father. The bishop’s discernment is always a community action, connected with the important opinions of his presbyters and deacons, of the People of God, and of anyone possibly giving him a useful contribution, maybe through concrete rather than formal acts”. That is one of the characteristics possibly emphasizing the action and the style of the bishop. Pope Francis pointed out that characteristic for the bishops beginning their ministries during the last year, while hearing them in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace. The bishop – says the Pope – is the one who “is not afraid to share his discernment with others, maybe changing it sometimes”, with the brothers of the episcopate, his own priests, and lay believers”. “Therefore, I am asking you to cultivate a hearing attitude, considering the freedom of giving up your point of view (whenever it may be partial or insufficient), to assume the point of view of God”.
