Europe: 70 thousand events for heritage days on the theme: culture and nature, “a landscape of possibilities”

(Strasbourg) There are over 70 thousand events listed in the programme of the European Heritage Days (EHD), a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, to “raise awareness of Europe’s common heritage and the continuous need for its protection, as well as to create shared cultural heritage experiences, promote inclusiveness and foster creativity and imagination”. The days, established in 1985 and coordinated by the two institutions since 1999, have the following theme this year: “Heritage and Nature: A Landscape of Possibilities”. The goal is to emphasise “heritage values embodied in nature, and how the environment shapes people’s lifestyle and contributes to their well-being and their socio-economic growth”. “This year’s theme encourages citizens to take a closer look at the space around them, appreciate its beauty, be inspired and find new values in nature, observing the different places which bring meaning, value and joy to their daily lives”, said Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Culture. The initiative is in line with the effort of the European Commission in support of “policies focusing on the need to manage and care for natural landscapes as composites of both natural and cultural heritage, as well as on the links between cultural and natural heritage”, the Commissioner stressed. The programme is available on the portal www.europeanheritagedays.com
