Ecumenism: Da Cunha (Ccee), “Catholic and Orthodox churches walking together”. Joint discernment “in the light of faith in Christ”

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, president of Ccee (Council of European Bishops Conferences), and cardinal Péter Erdő, his predecessor, have been invited to Istanbul by the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew, “to talk about cooperation between the Orthodox and Catholic churches in Europe and attend the Divine Liturgy on the first Sunday of Lent, also known as the Feast of Orthodoxy”. “I think the fact this meeting between the Ecumenical Patriarch and the current president of Ccee, with his predecessor, took place on such a Sunday and has been marked by this fine liturgy, seems to providentially and clearly show that ecumenical dialogue, and very concretely the dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic churches, results from prayer and from the certainty that the be-all and end-all, throughout the Christians’ lives, is Christ”. This was written by mgr. Duarte da Cunha, general secretary of Ccee, in a leading article for SIR. “When all Christians – he states – look to Christ and are not self-referential, then they can really embrace all of people’s lives and society as a whole, as Jesus did”. Da Cunha goes over the highlights of the meeting, then he concludes: “So, this meeting clearly shows that the Orthodox and Catholic churches in Europe are not just idly looking but are trying to make a joint discernment in the light of faith in Jesus Christ, to understand the sign of the time and find new forms of evangelisation to bring the truth and beauty of the Gospel to a world, which, even when it seems to be distracted and unwilling to listen to the Christian churches, is asking for a help that only Christ can give and that Christians do not only have the joy of having listened to but have also the mission of bringing to other people too”.
