Switzerland: 500 years after the Reformation, national and ecumenical memorial day

In Zug, tomorrow 1st April, the Swiss Bishops Conference (Ces), the Federation of Swiss Evangelical Churches (Feps), the association “Mehr Ranft” and the Swiss Central Catholic Conference will hold “a national and ecumenical memorial day” to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and the 600th anniversary of the birth of Switzerland’s patron saint, Nicolas de Flue. The theme will be “Together to the centre”; the goal is to express “a veritable ecumenical bond”. It will be a “unique event inspired by reconciliation and unity”. Moments of prayer, music, exchange of experiences will be held during the day, the highlight being an ecumenical celebration in St Michael’s Church at 4.00 pm, co-celebrated by Gottfried Locher, President of FEPS Board, and Felix Gmür, Bishop of Basel, followed by a festive moment. The text of the celebration will be available to the local communities, so they can replicate it during the year. “On this day of ecumenical celebration and feast, the Swiss Churches and aids associations want to assert their commitment to society and join forces in several areas: chaplaincies in hospitals and jails, asylum seekers in federal centres, joint statements, an ecumenical Easter campaign, and lots of canton-wide or local social projects, or projects for the protection of Creation”, the Churches state in a joint message.
