UK-EU: Brexit, Mr Longley (Catholic commentator), “our destiny is in somebody else’s hands”

A sad, unnecessary and damaging time for our country. This is how British Catholic commentator Clifford Longley calls the signing by British Prime Minister Theresa May of the letter triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which kick-starts the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. “Many people I know do not understand why Theresa May was so determined in taking this path which is so detrimental to the country, a path that she herself did not choose before becoming prime minister since she was against Brexit”, Mr Longley explains. “Instead of taking back control, as stated in the slogan of the Brexit campaign in the 23 June referendum, our destiny as a country is now in the hands of the other members of the European Union and I do hope that they will be well-disposed towards us, because they can do us great damage”. “It is up to us and to the EU to decide whether we want a hard or a soft Brexit, whether to impose tariffs on goods going in and out of the UK”, Mr Longley continues. “Another crucial issue is the value of the pound sterling. It may fall against the euro, thereby compensating for the damage caused by the tariffs imposed on our goods”. According to the Catholic commentator, today’s irony is that “those who have voted for Brexit, in the hope of gaining an advantage, will be disappointed and will realise that they have been deceived”.
