Bulgaria: parliamentary election, Gerb’s success. Tony Nicolov (“Christianity and Culture”), “pro-Europeans have won”

The winner at the parliamentary election held in Bulgaria yesterday, March 26th, is Gerb, the pro-European party led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. The Conservatives actually received 32.6% of votes. Still second of the list are Socialists with 27.1%, and in third place is the nationalist Patriotic Union party with 9.1% of votes. In fact, the alleged influence of Turkey and Erdogan did not happen, because Dost, the pro-Turkish party supported by Ankara, failed to overcome the 4% limit required to seat in Sofia’s Parliament. The result of the traditional party of the Turkish minority fell short of expectations, instead, with just 9% of votes. With 4.1% of votes, the new “Will” party will make is debut in the national assembly. The turnout was 42.7%. “The new government will include Gerb and Patriotic Union and, even if this is not the best match, it is much better than the variation Socialists rule in”, claims Tony Nicolov, political analyst and editor in chief of the “Christianity and Culture” magazine. “Pro-Europeans have won, and the rhetoric about Russia did not persuade Bulgarians”.
