Child abuse: card. O’Malley (Pontifical Commission), “Pope Francis is seriously committed to uprooting them” and “making the Church a safe home”

“Pope Francis is seriously committed to uprooting sex abuse in the Church” and to “making our Church a safe home for everyone” by promoting “a culture of protecting people” within it. It was ensured by cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, archbishop of Boston and president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (Pcpm) established three years ago by the Pontiff, as he spoke at the ”Education Day” held by such Commission today at Pontificia Università Gregoriana along with the University’s Centre for Child Protection. The theme of the meeting is “Safeguarding in Homes and Schools: Learning from Experience Worldwide”, because, as the cardinal explained, “education has been found by the Commission to be the key element of its efforts”. The cardinal, who led the diocese of Boston on its rebirth after the abuse scandal, expresses his solidarity with the victims and the people wounded in yesterday’s attack in London and calls to pray for them and then for the abused children and “for the Church to be the carrier of the evangelical message in the world by protecting them too”. Our goal, he explains, “is to keep learning new ways to implement and develop plans to protect victims of sex abuse”.
