European Parliament: Brussels, citizens replacing MEPs. Items on the agenda: Brexit, migration, employment

(Brussels) In the Strasbourg headquarters today, the European Parliament is hosting 751 European citizens, called to have their say on “what works in the European Union and what should be changed, as well as on the way the European Union should evolve to better respond to the current and future challenges”. Key items on the agenda include: youth unemployment, globalisation, security, climate change and what the EU will look like after Brexit. The guests are 751, as many as the MEPs. A notice from the EU Assembly explains: “The Treaty of Rome, signed sixty years ago, gave the green lights to the economic integration process and to a lasting peace for a continent that now a population of over 500 million. The European Parliament reflected on the progress made so far and the future of Europe. Now it is up to the citizens who replace the MEPs to have their say about Europe”. The event, called “Citizens’ Parliament”, was launched by president Antonio Tajani, who stated: “The debate on the future of Europe is all about the citizens. The European Parliament, the only democratically-elected institution, is hosting 751 European citizens, ready to speak their minds and join forces to outline our common future. The European Parliament is and will always be their home”. “Citizens’ Parliament” is one of the political events aimed to reflect on what a united Europe has achieved in sixty years since the signing of the Treaty of Rome.
