Card. Vlk: sympathies from CCEE, “Bishops of Europe had the opportunity to appreciate his faith, tested under the communist regime”

Card. Miloslav Vlk

The European Bishops sent a message of condolence for the death of Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, Bishop Emeritus of Prague and past President of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE). It was addressed by Card. Angelo Bagnasco, President of CCEE, also on behalf of the Secretariat of St. Gallen, to Cardinal Dominik Duka, current Archbishop of Prague and President of the Czech Bishops’ Conference. “The European Episcopacy – reads the message sent on Saturday 18, as soon as the news of the Cardinal’s death was received – and particularly the Council of European Bishops of Europe whose President was the Cardinal between 1993 and 2001 has had the opportunity to appreciate his faith and how this was tested under the communist regime. Furthermore, the Church in Europe has witnessed the joy with which he had become engaged in the New Evangelization of the continent. His Eminence guided CCEE at a time of intense change where the East and the West of Europe found themselves once again together after years of division. He was untiring in trying to promote and sustain the communion of the Catholic Church and unity with the other Churches. We ask the Good Shepherd and Lord of Life to bring eternal happiness to that apostle of Unity which was the Cardinal. At the same time we assure you, Your Eminence, and the Catholic Church in Prague and the entire Czech Republic our closeness at this time”.
