Pope Francis: to Roman priests, “temptation is always present in our lives. Without temptation, we do not progress in our faith”

“Temptation is always present in the life of Simon Peter”, said Pope Francis who dedicated the second part of his address – which was not, however, read out in full – to the figure of Peter. Indeed, the latter “shows us first-hand how faith progresses through confession and trials”, and we can see that “even sin contributes to the progress of our faith”. “Temptation is always present in our lives too”, Pope Francis added off the cuff. “Without temptation, we do not progress in our faith”. “In the Our Father – he continued off the cuff – we ask for the grace not to fall, but not for the grace not to be tempted”. “Peter committed the worst sin – denying the Lord – and was made Pope nonetheless”, Pope Francis pointed out. “It is important for a priest to know how to position his own temptations and his own sins in the scope of that prayer of Jesus that our faith not fail us, but that it instead mature and serve to strengthen the faith of others entrusted to us”, the Pope encouraged the clergy. “I like to repeat – he went on to say – that a priest or a Bishop who do not feel they are sinners, who do not go to confession, and who withdraw into themselves, make no progress in their faith. However, we need to be careful that the confession and discernment of one’s temptations include and take into account that pastoral intention that the Lord wants to give them”.
