(Strasbourg) It is a busy week for politics in the EU, with the start of the Brexit process for the United Kingdom (Tuesday, 14 March) and the elections in the Netherlands (where Eurosceptic forces are expected to gain ground in a country that is dangerously crossing swords with Mr Erdogan’s Turkey). The European institutions will meet in Strasbourg for the plenary session of the European Parliament from today to 16 March. Wednesday will be the D-day with a debate on the 9-10 March European Council and on the Declaration of Rome in the presence of Donald Tusk (president of the European Council), Jean-Claude Juncker (president of the EU Commission), and Paolo Gentiloni (Italian prime minister). During the debate, MEPs will take stock of the outcome of last week’s summit and discuss the “Rome Declaration” which will be presented for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties. It will also be interesting to follow the debate with Federica Mogherini on Tuesday. MEPs will discuss with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs the reinstatement of the “global gag” rule by US President Donald Trump, by which foreign NGOs financed by the United States are obliged to certify that they neither perform nor promote abortion. The “Presidential Memorandum” – the executive order that prohibits US-funded international NGOs from providing services and information related to abortion – was signed by President Trump on 23 January 2017.
