Germany: Misereor and Catholic youth, Lenten action starting with milk. Solidarity with Burkina Faso

“Stop! For milk it is worth the effort!”: this is the slogan of the joint Lenten campaign organised by the German development aid organisation “Misereor” and by the Federation of German Catholic Youth “BDKJ”. The initiative aims to support the work of farmers and livestock farmers in Burkina Faso, and is based on education in the sustainable consumption of milk and dairy products. It is aimed at young people in particular so that they understand the importance of nutrition in social development. “The event encourages young people to share their views about milk – the ad of the Lenten campaign reads – and the consumption of milk and dairy products can unite people across the world in the face of contemporary challenges”. The choice of Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa, comes from the fact that “livestock farmers and local producers earn less money for their milk due to the low price of dried milk imported from Europe”. By discussing the commercial strategies and the unprofitable economic decisions made by local producers, the BDKJ and Misereor “invite young people in Germany to reconsider their consumption behaviour, to look at the broader picture, and to become politically active”. The project will support small dairies in Burkina Faso, also helping them with trade. The action will begin in Saarbrücken on 3 March in the presence of Card. Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo, Archbishop of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).
