Germany: more thefts and sacrilege in churches. Msgr. Bachner (Cologne), “Education is also a problem”

The number of thefts and sacrilegious actions against churches in Germany increased in 2015: 2,589 cases reported against 2,289 in 2014. The national situation lets us suppose further increase of crimes in 2016. The report by the German Catholic press agency KNA points out a vast range of crimes such as theft of sacred furniture or material for social activities (spotlights and personal computers), iron materials (gutters, shutters or cast-iron windows), etc. According to Lutz Dettmer from the ecclesial insurance services, the calculation includes many different items: “Most of authorities talk about ‘theft with aggravating factors’, others of ‘church intrusions’. Some lists include ‘particularly serious cases of theft of art objects and antiques’”. A few cases struck the public opinion, such as the theft of the relics of Saint John Paul II from the Cathedral of Cologne in June 2016, “with modest material value, but great ideal importance”, recalled Parish Priest of the Cathedral Msgr. Gerd Bachner. The Parish Priest says disappearance of respect of the sacred is dangerous: “Little profanation actions are very common, from the drug addict stealing offers for the poor to the profanation action for faith hate; however, everything is also caused by the people in the church with mobile phones or cups of coffee, who don’t make a distinction between malls, railway station premises and church; they don’t adjust their behaviour”.
