Migration and peace forum: Card. Parolin, “nationalistic closures” and “fears” create “obstacles and barriers” causing “abuses and losses of human lives”

Today, “interdependency of peace, development and respect of fundamental rights is clearer and clearer”, but States “tend to hide in restricted areas of interest or more or less hidden nationalistic closures”, while “we see political strategies based on fluctuant interests, insecurity and fear, contrasting political programmes, endless conflicts, and violation of human rights”. The analysis of the current world scenario was made by Cardinal, Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, this morning, at the 6th International Migration Forum on Migration and peace, in progress at the Chamber of Deputies on initiative by the Scalabrini International Migration Network, the Ministry for Human Integral Development and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The Cardinal speaks about “migration policy and barriers or obstacles causing development of alternative, more dangerous migration, exploitation ways, including abuses of traffickers and losses of human lives”. In this situation, “the bravest and forward-looking positions are few”. For this reason, “cooperation on all levels” is necessary, making migration a “free option, apart from necessity”.
