Lent: Germany and Luxemburg, “car fasting” is back “to question lifestyle”

The Lent initiative “car fasting” re-starts in the dioceses of southern Germany and Luxemburg on 1 March. Achieving its twentieth round, this campaign proposes to leave the car home as much as possible, using other means of transport in this period, that is public transport, bicycles, car-sharing, or just feet. The goals of this initiative are a lot, say the organisers: “Question one’s lifestyle during Lent, living life with more awareness”, “taking active part in climate protection, and preserve our children’s future”, or else, “take advantage from exercise” and “contact new people”. Dioceses are adopting several initiatives in this period, such as the Luxemburg workshop on 8 March to learn how to use tablets and smartphones to travel without car (using apps to know public transport timetable, looking for routes…). A few cities give the people free tickets for those who subscribe the campaign. In particular, two events will characterise this year: in Mainz, 14 March, a seminar will be the opportunity for a few experts to appraise the meaning of this 20-year-old practice, with about two thousand participants every year. In Luxemburg, again: a great meeting about “Laudato Si and the 2030 Agenda” on 26 April.
