Council of Europe: Strasbourg, World Forum for Democracy. Politics, social media and populism

“The role of political parties and social media in the light of a fully-expanding populism” will be the general topic of the three-day World Forum for Democracy 2017 (Strasbourg, 8-10 Novembers). A big meeting of “political leaders, militants and changers” called to “share their experiences to prove that the expansion of populisms is not unstoppable at all”, write the organisers of the event, which are the Council of Europe in partnership with the city of Strasburg, the Grand Est Region and the French Government. The theme will be split into three stages: from the democracy of the parties to the democracy of citizens; the media, friends or foes of democracy; and lastly the question whether populism is a problem. The programme will be enriched by three workshops: from fake news to facts: how to strengthen the bond between research, politics and society to fight populism? How to answer populist anti-migration speeches and acts? Gender equality and women’s political independence. And then again, 13 “think tanks” to find out to what extent the current initiatives “are improving democratic transparency, responsibility, responsiveness, inclusion, participation, confidence in democratic institutions”. Guest speakers will be over two hundred (https://www.coe.int/fr/web/world-forum-democracy).
