“As the history of the European Union teaches us, in democracy the only way to go is by joining forces towards harmony and unity”. The president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, ended the debate on the Constitution, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Spain, in the light of the Catalonia events. “No one liked what happened last Sunday, but unilateral decisions, including a declaration of independence from a sovereign State, are not only against the European legal framework, they are bound to cause dangerous divisions”. “This Parliament – Tajani said – sends a call to support a peaceful, in-depth reflection that may boost dialogue in Spain, in accordance with the constitutional framework, including the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, and that may give politics back to the institutions”.
