EU Parliament: Brexit, negotiations at a standstill. Three cruxes: citizens’ rights, financial obligations, Irish question

(Strasbourg) As widely announced, the European Parliament has in fact “defeated” the current negotiations between the EU and the British Government, stating that the progress made so far has not been “enough to start discussing future relationships” (after Brexit). In particular, the law passed by the EU Parliament (557 votes for, 92 vote against, and 29 abstentions) insists on the priorities set out for the negotiations: citizens’ rights, the UK’s financial obligations, the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The resolution is sent to the EU-27 leaders, who will be meeting on October 20th for the European Council to discuss the next political steps to London. “Though the EU Parliament welcomes the explanations provided by Prime Minister May in her recent speech in Florence – a notice from Strasbourg says –, the MEPs wish the UK Government may submit specific measures without further delay, to protect the whole of the rights that the 4.5 million EU and UK citizens currently enjoy, to fully meet the financial obligations undertaken by the United Kingdom towards the EU, and to solve the problem of the Ireland/Northern Ireland border, in perfect compliance with the Good Friday agreement”. One further condition “to close the first stage in the negotiations is to make sure the EU law will be abided by until the United Kingdom officially leaves the European Union”.
