Luxembourg: ecumenical service for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. “How can we be a Church today?”

“Christians of all confessions” are invited to an “ecumenical service in the Cathedral of Luxembourg” on Reformation Day, falling on October 31st. The initiative has been taken by the German-speaking Evangelical Community, the Protestant Reformed Church of Luxembourg and the Catholic Church. The solemn service, during which pastor Hans-Martin Heins and archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich will give a speech, “is the highlight of the ‘Reformation – Luxembourg 2017’ series of events”, as written on the website of the Catholic archdiocese. As in other European countries, 500 years after “Martin Luther’s drive to renew the Church based on the Gospel and the ensuing separation of the Church”, the organisers want, “with this ecumenical service, start renewing the Churches today, give a sign of unity in faith, and celebrate communion through Jesus Christ”. The anniversary of the Reformation has inspired a long list of ecumenical initiatives in Luxembourg since March 2016, when Margot Käßmann, ambassador for the Jubilee of the Reformation of the German Evangelical Church, had gone to Luxembourg. The common thread of all these events is “How can we be a Church today? Reformation and ecumenical responsibility”.
