Finland: Law on euthanasia under discussion. Religious leaders’ statement, “Human life always precious”. Palliative care and sedation

The Catholic bishop Teemu Sippo, the metropolitan bishop Elia, the Lutheran bishop Seppo Häkkisen and the Pentecostal Esko Matikaisen signed a statement about the discussion on the legalisation of euthanasia that is going on within the Parliamentary Commission for Social Affairs, in Finland, following a public initiative. “The problem is complex and ethically delicate. It is understandable that people forced to watch the heart-breaking pain of their beloved ones may see the Law on euthanasia as a solution”. But “human life is precious, from birth to death. We cannot judge life in terms of length or quality; every life is God’s gift”, write the church leaders, who quote chief physician Risto Pelkosen, according to whom “euthanasia does not solve the problem of suffering, but creates more”, and they ask: “who will the end-of-life be delegated to? How could the conditions for execution of euthanasia be restricted? How heavy is the burden for the doctor who has to decide about human life?”. And, quoting the “dangerous direction” taken by the Netherlands and Belgium, where such practice “has created more and more damage”, they warn: “making euthanasia possible dulls the perception of the human being and speaks of indifference to human dignity”. Efforts should be made, instead, for “palliative sedation” and the “development and extension of adequate medical care for everyone: it is an ethically and medically sustainable solution in the final stage of a painful life”.
