Germany: Bonn, second congress of German Catholic mass media going on now. New digital frontiers

“This is just the beginning…” is the motto of the second Katholische Medienkongress, the congress of German Catholic mass media taking place in Bonn and ending tonight. Organised by the Katholisches Medienhaus, an organisation that since 2011 has been bringing together many independent German Catholic mass media, the congress is dealing with the challenges of the digital world and what to do for the Catholic world to better take up the challenge. Over 350 journalists, media experts and church leaders are also discussing web policies, participatory rights and changes in the media, as well as the effects of such changes on the Church. There are many important speakers, such as the president of the German Bishops Conference (Dbk), cardinal Reinhard Marx. The Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, mgr. Gebhard Fürst, director of the media pastoral service at Dbk, asked for an “honest debate on the consequences of digital change”. In the process, Fürst pointed out, the Church should not give “interpretative sovereignty on digital developments” to other groups: on the contrary, “one must become as competent as possible”. Given the need for sharing ideas, the Bishop also pointed to the need to investigate “areas that demand our increasing attention”, such as the collection of sensitive data by digital banks and “hatred and brutality” on social media.
