Young European Council: Brussels, 100 delegates under 30 to discuss employment, “unpaid internships” and “digital world”

(Brussels) From 16 to 19 October, Brussels will be hosting the Young European Council (YEC), the annual conference attended by approximately 100 delegates from across the EU meant to “discuss policy and European affairs from the youth perspective” and “provide actionable input to EU policy making”. Indeed, every year the YEC provides “innovative policy recommendations” on key topics of the European Council’s agenda. The topics for discussion this year, selected by the Young European Council, the body organising the event, will include the labour market, namely “widespread youth unemployment, unpaid internships, and social mobility”; “European policies that impact the internal affairs of States”, with a special focus on the migrant crisis and issues related to it; and, finally, in line with the priorities of the Estonian presidency, the topic of “digitalisation and communication”, from the point of view of the opportunities offered by the growing role of technology in the communication of ideas and also of the increasing risk of producing and disseminating the so-called “fake news”. The Young European Council “is not a simulation game”, the organisers explained: indeed, the young participants are entrusted with the responsibility, after the Council, of disseminating the results among the MPs, politicians, and experts of their home countries.
