Eastern Catholic Churches: Shevchuk (Ukraine), “true ecumenism requires the courage to forgive and ask for forgiveness”

“True ecumenism requires humility, but also courage. Historical arguments should be used solely to avoid the sins of the past in our future”. This is an excerpt from the report that His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, submitted to the plenary session of the Oriental Churches taking place these days at the Vatican, dedicated to the ecumenical mission of the Eastern Catholic Churches. “The experience of these past two centuries – he said – leads us to the conclusion that, when it comes to the issue of the restoration of the unity and communion of the Churches, Christians are divided into two categories: the first includes those who wish that unity, and the second those who do not want it. We also know from daily experience that when we really want something, we do our best and everything we can to fulfil our desire. Where there is a desire, we find ways and means to make it come true. At the same time, however, if a person does not have this desire, then he or she will find many reasons – historical, canonical, pastoral, etc. – to avoid this unit”. According to a statement released by the Secretariat of the Major Archbishop of Kyiv, His Beatitude, in his report, presented the ecumenical activities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and suggested concrete steps towards ecumenical dialogue.
