Denmark: 900 events for the anniversary of the Reformation. Bak (Lutherans), “Martin Luther’s 95 theses in a modern scenario”

There have been over 900 events held in Denmark that celebrated, recalled, delved into the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. The effort, as explained on the website of the Danish Church by Jens Torkild Bak, director of the Ribe Cathedral, was to “look at Martin Luther’s 95 theses in a modern scenario, in a world that is different from the one back then”. The events held for the anniversary included a show by Sigurd Barrett, the famous musician, who toured the country with his puppet, Snapper, singing songs about Luther’s life. In Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg and Sønderborg, actor Bjarne Henriksen, interviewed by Niels Krause-Kjaer, dressed up as the Reformer in a series of “history talk-shows”. Many have been the exchanges of ideas, discussions and reflections about the importance of the Reformation for today’s society, and then exhibitions, tours, parties, games, workshops and children’s tours. There has been no shortage of new beers or special cakes made for the anniversary too. Now, all eyes are on Tuesday, October 31st, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, when “many churches will fill up” for cheerful celebrations and the public TV will host a concert, which will be “a musical tour through Luther’s faith and universe”, with pieces by Bach, Wagner and Poulenc played by the Danish Symphonic Orchestra. That day will also be filled with music by the sound of the bells pealing out, at the invitation of the twelve Lutheran bishops of Denmark.
