Czech Republic: catholic bishops say “no” to adoption of children by same-sex couples

The Commission Iustitia et Pax of the Czech Bishops´ Conference appeals to responsible national authorities to reject the amendment to the law on registered partnerships tabled by the Association of Family Centers in the Czech Republic. The amendment includes the permission for same-sex couples to adopt children, which is strongly opposed by the Catholic Church in the country. Bishop Vaclav Maly, president of the Commission Iustitia et Pax, draws attention to the attempts to satisfy the “rights” of adults to the detriment of children’s needs, and points to the fact that adoption by homosexual and lesbian couples can hardly solve the problem of abandoned and abused children, which is often used as an argument in the discussion on this topic. “The amendment of the law is a further attempt to downplay the importance of biological parenthood as a unique and irreplaceable potential in human life. Embryonic cells cannot be considered to be just biological material without any responsibility on the part of donors for the fate of this new life”, reads the statement of the Commission, warning that children can easily become a “commodity” and the means to satisfy the individual needs of those who just “want to have a baby at any cost”. The adoption of children in registered partnerships does not only concern those who were born in heterosexual relationships, but also opens the discussion on the procreation of children in same-sex relationships.
