Economy: EU Commission, “rules and market reforms to protect European citizens”

(Brussels) If rules are clearer and citizens better protected, consumers are more confident and markets and economy are favourably affected, whether it is power or water, railway transport, mortgages, mobile phones or ecommerce. This is one of the points found by the Consumer Market Monitoring Survey 2016 published by the EU Commission, which monitors the consumers’ opinions of the operation of 42 goods and services markets. “The findings show – it reads – that services have improved since the latest Survey, in 2014. Such positive trend, which began in 2010, is taking up speed, especially in financial services, which have progressed the most. The three goods markets that have received the highest feedback are books, magazines and papers, entertainment goods and big household appliances, such as refrigerators”. As to services, “the three markets that are top of the list have to do with entertainment, ranging from holiday accommodation to cultural and leisure services, as well as services for sport”. There is no shortage of problems in some areas such as banking services. Consumer commissioner Věra Jourová states: “Consumer-friendly rules, market reforms and an effective enforcement of the rules make confidence grow. Consumers are the centre of the EU Commission’s plans, such as the digital single market and the Energy Union”.
