Slovakia: Renovabis Foundation and Bishops’ Conference to support 11 roma pastoral projects

(Bratislava) – Housing for Roma people in need, promotion of gypsy music bands spreading the rich cultural traditions of the Roma ethnicity, and the development of projects for Roma mothers and their children in their biggest settlement in Eastern Slovakia where this minority has the highest proportional representation of all regions in the country. These are only three out of eleven projects approved for funding by the German Catholic foundation Renovabis and the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia. “The system of this donorship is very interesting because it expects the recipients of the donation to be active, not just sit and wait. They are invited to get the interest of donors and obtain a certain amount of money themselves, and this sum will be doubled with support from our sources”, explains Jan Gyulai, coordinator of Renovabis, pointing to the fact that this foundation has two main areas of interest in Slovakia – grants for schools established and run by the Catholic Church and the above-mentioned support for pastoral projects benefitting Roma people.
