Germany: Berlin, Symposium of German, French and Swiss Churches on “Migration and cultural identities in Europe”

The presidents of the Bishops’ Conferences of Germany, France and Switzerland have held an exchange of views yesterday in Berlin about the latest ecclesial news and developments in the social debate. Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the German Bishops’ Conference, and his counterparts from France, Archbishop Georges Pontier, and from Switzerland, Bishop Charles Morerod, have discussed the issue of “Migration and religious and cultural identities in Europe – Challenges facing the Church”. Fifty priests and academics joined in the debate which started with the discussion of some questions about the connections between migration, the origins of migrants, demographic change, and Europe’s social identity and cultural formation; systems for a peaceful coexistence in diversity, and the Church’s response to the latest developments. The crisis of traditional integration models in the European identity was also highlighted together with the need for national migration laws to be in line with human rights obligations and the principles of international law. Mgrs Marx, Pontier and Morerod concluded that “when we are faced with migration issues, we speak of a problem that concerns the Church and our faith. We see God in every person who seeks our protection. Different countries may offer different solutions, but human dignity is non-negotiable. Migration will continue over the next few decades and will be on the agenda of both our societies and the Church”.
