Migrants: European bishops hold summit in Madrid. Card. Bozanic, “no one can ‘wash their hands’ in Europe today”

“In these times, there is no room for hypocrisy. We are all called to cooperate. Under no circumstances can anyone ‘wash their hands’ in Europe today: national governments, European authorities, society, religious communities – we are all called to make our contribution in one way or another”. Card. Josip Bozanic said this this morning as he opened the meeting of national directors for the pastoral care of migrants that is taking place in Madrid (until tomorrow, 27 September). “If we look at the refugee crisis in Europe, we have to be realistic. First of all, not all European countries can guarantee the same treatment to those who arrive. Indeed, there is a huge economic gap between European countries. And second, it is not possible to build the future of any society on the basis of prejudice and ideologies”. According to the Croatian cardinal, in this very context, the Church, who is always sensitive to human suffering, tries to spread the “culture of hospitality and solidarity, and bears witness to communion in the world” through “an important action of cooperation and coordination between state and church bodies”, and the promotion of a “culture of encounter” in which dialogue and charity are two essential elements.
