Mexico: kidnapped priest found dead in Morelia. Funeral today

The funeral mass for Fr. José Alfredo López Guillén, the Mexican priest of the parish of the Most Holy Trinity in Janamuato (Diocese of Morelia, state of Michoacán) who was kidnapped on Thursday and found dead on Saturday, will take place today at 3pm in the parish church of the Most Holy Trinity. The body will then be transferred to his native parish of Panindícuaro, where another requiem mass will be celebrated before his burial. The news of the death of Fr. López (aged 53, with 15 years of service as a priest) was given in a short statement issued yesterday by the Archdiocese of Morelia, headed by Cardinal Alberto Suárez Inda. Besides expressing “deep sadness” for what had happened, the statement also specified that the priest had probably been killed a few days ago, perhaps the same day he was abducted. “We condemn these acts of violence and the situation of uncertainty that our State is experiencing. We hope that the authorities will shed light on this crime”, the statement reads. The dead body of the priest was found in an area called “Las Guayabas” in the state of Michoacan, not far from the parish of the Most Holy Trinity. Last week, two other priests were killed in Mexico, in the state of Veracruz. This follows the disappearance of two other priests who have been missing for some time. Since 2012, fifteen priests have been murdered in Mexico. Fr. López, like the other two priests who were killed last week, had very strong connections with young people and was trying to contrast drug trafficking.
