Life: FAFCE, to the Council of Europe “No more surrogate motherhood”

A new proposal for surrogate motherhood regulations will be debated tomorrow and possible adopted during the closed-door meeting of the Committee on social affairs, health and sustainable development of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). It was made known by a press release by the European Federation of Catholic Family Associations (FAFCE) expressing hope for tomorrow’s meeting to be the right opportunity “to halt this question, stopping a procedure raising concerns on several levels”. President of FAFCE Antoine Renard hopes they will not look for “compromises or low-level solutions about fundamental rights”. The proposal will be presented by Belgian MEP Petra de Sutter, as happened last 15 March. That will be the last chance to debate the issue, because the procedure terms of PACE regulations will expire next 3 October. FAFCE reminds us that last March the Committee rejected a proposal made by the same speaker, who has “direct links with clinics doing surrogacy”, and thus she is in a position of “conflict of interest”.
