Germany: Fulda, autumn session of the Bishops Conference. Taking stock of the country’s social condition

The autumn session of the German Bishops Conference (Bdk) will take place in Fulda from 19th to 22nd September. Chaired by the archbishop of Munich-Freising, card. Reinhard Marx, the 66 German bishops will focus on a survey of Germany’s social condition: ”Along with God, you hear a cry, poverty and social exclusion as a challenge for the Church and Caritas”. In addition, the members of the 14 specialist committees and subcommittees of Dbk will be renewed, in the run-up to the new five-year working period, until 2021. At the meeting, the bishops will discuss the current problems of employment and the acceptance and homing of the refugees. They will also investigate the ecumenical issues that concern the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, with a focus on the Catholics attending the celebrations. The situation of the European Union, the digital transformation of society, and the legacy of the World Youth Day are the other items on the agenda. The opening session of the General Assembly on Monday, 19th September, will be attended by the Apostolic Nuncio, archbishop Nikola Eterovic. The bishop of Gliwice, Poland, mgr. Jan Kopiec, the auxiliary bishop of Strasbourg, France, mgr. Vincent Dollmann, and the archbishop of the Chaldean Catholic Archeparchy of Erbil, Iraq, mgr. Bashar Warda, have been invited as guests and rapporteurs.
