Church in Europe: Cracow, a conference about solidarity in migration, security and environment

Cracow, Poland, will host the XVI Yearly Conference about the role of the Catholic Church in European integration, on 21st and 22nd September. The key topic this year will be “European solidarity”: it is a “key skill in the solution of the multiple problems that Europe is confronted with nowadays”, the organisers explain, especially in three areas: “security and defence policy, migration and asylum, energy and climate policy”. The event is organised by a number of organisations, such as the Pontifical University John Paul II, the Robert Schuman Foundation in Luxembourg, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences (Comece), and the European People’s Party. A wide range of speakers will be there too: Hans-Gert Pöttering, former president of the European Parliament, archbishop Silviano M. Tomasi, delegate of the Holy See to the UN in Geneva, and MEP Jerzy Buzek, who will give the opening addresses in the three areas in which “solidarity policies” need to be jointly implemented. The discussion will then be carried on by three workgroups that will report their conclusions at the plenary meeting. A “special session” will be focussed on “solidarity between Churches and religious communities”, on 22nd September.
