EU: European Citizens’ Initiative, “Mum, Dad & Kids”. “Accurate definitions of marriage and family”

(Brussels) – The European Citizens’ Initiative “Mum, Dad & Kids”, aiming to ask for a EU legislation that defines the meaning of marriage as “the union of a man and a woman” and the family as “based on marriage and/or descendants”, has collected over 100 thousand signatures. Promoted by a committee of seven citizens from seven different EU member states, the Initiative was launched on 4th April. The goal is collecting one million signatures by the end of the year. Even if the principle of subsidiarity in force in the EU means that all political decisions that concern the family are the sole responsibility of the member states, the promoters explain, “lately the EU’s texts have increasingly mentioned the family”. This “is a problem, even more so because the concept of marriage and family is exposed to more and more divergent points of view in each member state”. The current situation is that, “since the meaning is no longer clear, the texts of the European regulations are becoming impossible to enforce or understand”. That’s why the European Citizens’ Initiative “Mum, Dad & Kids” asks for “accurate, clear definitions of marriage and family” that “may contribute to European unity based on a common denominator for all member states, which reflects the universal reality of mankind, marriage between a man and a woman, and the relationship between a father, a mother and a child”.
