Pope Francis: call for the establishment of a Day of Prayer for abuse victims

The establishment of a Day of Prayer for abuse victims, the development of a “template for guidelines” for the Bishops’ Conferences and the launch of the Commission’s website. These are the main topics that have been discussed by the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors during its work session that has come to an end yesterday at the Vatican. According to a statement released today by the Pontifical body, “the Holy Father has requested that National Bishops’ Conferences choose an appropriate day on which to pray for the survivors and victims of sexual abuse as part of a Universal Day of Prayer initiative”. The proposal for a Day of Prayer was made to the Commission by a survivor and the Pope welcomed it. As reported in the statement, some Bishops’ Conferences have already taken steps to enact the proposal, such as Australia – which marks the Day of Prayer on Sunday September 11, in conjunction with their National Day for Child Protection –, the Philippines, or South African bishops. During its work in the past few days, the Commission has also stressed the importance of the Papal document “As a Loving Mother” which insists on the accountability of bishops, commitment to education, and the many meetings that have been organised across the world by the members of the Commission.
