Portugal: Braga, the Catholic Church joins the “White Night”. Concert of bells in town

The diocese of Braga decided to join the “White Night 2016” due from 2nd to 4th September by taking part in the closing of the event organised by the municipal authorities as a concert of bells rung by some churches of the Portuguese town. Called “Bracara Augusta”, created by Valencia-born composer and musician Llorenç Barber and jointly conducted by Montserrat Palacios, the concert will try to emphasise “the connection between music, art and culture”, in the attempt to “turn Braga into an orchestra that can spread in every corner of the town the sounds and echoes of its old bells”, the programme of the initiative, posted by the Municipality, says. On its web page, the diocese of Braga also points out that many of the town’s churches will be open to the public during the three-day feast: most notably, the cathedral, the monastery of Tibães and the Pius XII Museum will hold guided meetings and children’s events as well. The main basilica will host an event named “The spaces of the cathedral as seen by the younger ones”. Classed as a “Building of public interest” since as early as 1944, the Benedictine monastery founded in Tibães will host a night walk called “Bats in the monastery” and a marionette show: “There are monks in the monastery”. Lastly, the Pius XII Museum will organise workshops for kids and their families.
