“Lord, have mercy on your people! Lord, forgiveness for so much cruelty!”. This is the text of the note written in Spanish and left by the Pope after signing the “Book of Honour” in Auschwitz. These are the only words that marked the Pope’s visit to the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps, that lasted just a little less than two hours. A visit marked by silence and prayer.
