WYD 2016: Polish newspapers and sites, growing attention on the event in Cracow. Wiscicki, “but religiosity is decreasing in the country”

The presence of the WYD on newspapers and information sites of Poland is intensifying with the beginning of the official programme of the days. Today, daily newspaper “Rzeczpospolita” publishes a dialogue with President of Polish bishops Monsignor Stanislaw Gadecki, who recalls the WYD of 1991 with John Paul II, pointing out that the meeting of youth with the Pontiff in Cracow is a meeting of the East with the West; this time, too. “All these youth arriving in Cracow feel that the Church is theirs”, says Vice Director of the Organisation Office of the event, Father Krzysztof Dukielski. Without fearing “a temporary spark”, the priest reminds us of the importance of “trying to keep it alive”, because, above all, “we must not leave youth alone”. Historian Tomasz Wiscicki and contributing editor of Catholic magazine “Wiez” reflects on the religiosity of youth “participating in the Eucharist celebrations dedicated to them, in pilgrimages, and in ecclesial movements in great numbers”. Mentioning statistics, Wiscicki says that the busiest group in the religious field is made up of people aged from 25 to 34, followed by 16-24; he points out that the crucial time for Polish religiosity was the death of John Paul II, since religiosity indexes of the young have been clearly decreasing as of 2005.
