WYD 2016: Polish newspapers’ headlines. Politics, faith, and comparisons between Wojtyla and Bergoglio

“The Pope in the country of strength and faith”, is the headline of today’s issue of the most popular Conservative weekly paper “W Sieci” (Online). “The Pontiff comes to a country that is particularly consistent in its faith, an oasis of moral calm”, states, in an interview on the weekly paper, the Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo who, hinting at the recent terrorist attacks, points out that “terrorism is a declared war against European civilisation” and “regrets” “the weakness of the European facilities”. In addition, she also points out that, “if the diagnoses of the Law and Justice party (Poland’s absolute-majority government Party) had been taken into account”, “maybe things would have been different”. The weekly paper quotes what Jesus said to St Faustina, written in her Diary: “I love Poland in a particular way and if it obeys my wishes I will exalt her in power and holiness. From it will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for my final coming” (1732). The 25th July issue of the weekly “Wprost” makes comparisons between John Paul II, “who was a guide”, and Pope Francis, “the travel companion”. Adam Szostkiewicz of the weekly “Polityka” tries instead to answer the question, “Why the national conservative right does not like Pope Francis”. The “Wiara” website of “Gosc Niedzielny”, Poland’s most popular weekly paper, quoting figures from Cbos (an authoritative public survey centre) proves that the Cracow WYD will enable Polish people to deepen their faith and will help promote the country.
