Romano Guardini: Archdiocese of Munich and Freising starts preparations for beatification

“The archdiocese of Munich and Freising started preparations for the beatification processes of journalist Fritz Gerlich (1883-1934) and philosopher of religion Romano Guardini (1885-1968)”, said Bettina Göbner (archdiocese’s press office) to SIR. In the last few days, German Catholic Agency KNA made known that a postulator is likely to have already been appointed to prepare a list of witnesses to be heard during the beatification process. “Card. Reinhard Marx should start the two beatifications by the end of the year”, said Göbner. Romano Guardini was born in Verona. He was very young when his family moved to Mainz for work reasons. Guardini studied there, and became a priest in 1910. He made his entire academic career in Germany, and died in Munich. He was an influent Catholic theologian in the twentieth century. He is regarded as one of the precursors of Vatican Council II, above all, within the liturgical reform. On the other hand, Fritz Gerlich is regarded as a martyr; he was Calvinist; he converted to Catholicism. He was imprisoned and then put to death in the camp of Dachau, in 1934; he paid with his life his strong opposition to Nazism and Adolf Hitler, carried out through the pages of the weekly magazine he founded, Der Gerade Weg (The Straight Path).
