Austria: Msgr. Schwarz (ÖBK), “The Church may learn a lot from sport”

It is a sort of “chance for the human family to be together, more and more united”: that’s the thought of Monsignor Alois Schwarz, bishop in charge of the Pastoral for Sport on behalf of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference (ÖBK); he spoke about the next Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The right chance was a meeting with the persons in charge of the Diocesan Centres of Community Sport in Austria (DSG), during the annual meeting in Klagenfurt. We hope for “funny and friendly patriotism”, says a joint press release by bishop of Klagenfurt and DSG, “which is not against others, but reflects the polychromy of nations”. And more: that is true “for the highly successful athletes of Paralympic Games”. According to Schwarz, the Olympic Games may be important for understanding fundamental values such as justice, equity and respect for other people’s success: the athletes are idols for many people, and thus, the spirit of Olympia should also be used “to implement universal human rights and human dignity”. In this respect, the Olympic Games are the emblem of “unified multiplicity”: a place, a time “where the people gather and meet, getting rid of prejudices, without being strangers to each other any longer”. For the priest, “the Church may learn a lot from sport, and our challenge is exactly that one”.
