“We are serene but also a bit worried about the unfolding situation. We are following the events with plenty of questions about how they might turn out”. In an interview with SIR, the Latin Archbishop of Izmir (Smyrna), Mgr. Lorenzo Piretto, commented on the situation in Turkey after last week’s failed coup. “It is not for us to decode and interpret what is going on”, the archbishop continued. “We hope and pray that tension will ease, and that those currently in government show moderation”. “Further tensions or, even worse, disproportionate vengeance are of no benefit to Turkey”, said Mgr. Piretto. “We hope for a climate of reconciliation and peace”.
