WYD Cracow: media department. 335,437 pilgrims expected to go to Cracow so far. From 187 different countries

So far, 335,437 pilgrims have registered to go to the WYD. They are from 187 different countries. The largest groups come from Poland, Italy, France, Spain, USA, Germany, Brazil, Ukraine and Portugal. For the first time in the life of the WYD, pilgrims will also be coming from Kosovo, Bangladesh, Gibraltar, Palestine, Réunion, Myanmar and South Sudan. These figures have been posted today by the Media Department of the WYD in Cracow that also revealed the findings of an online survey, which was responded to by about 7,400 boys and girls who will be attending the WYD. 75.4% of them go to Cracow “to find themselves through Jesus Christ” and to “attend an event with Pope Francis”. As to the meaning of the event, the respondents said that it is a “life-changing event, with long-term effects” on one’s personal growth (81.5%) and to “build a better world” (75.7%). The WYD is regarded as an opportunity to “help strengthen religious commitment”. Boys and girls from 100 different countries, with an average age of 22, “most of them quite committed already”, responded to the survey, run by Spanish agency GAD3: 86.1% of them go to Sunday Mass, 60.5% pray, and 52.5% are involved in apostolic groups. About 80% of the young people going to Cracow will do it with a parish church or a religious association. “Most of the pilgrims who attended a WYD in the past – the Department finds – said that it had a positive effect on their lives”.
