EU-Churches: meeting between Slovakian presidency and ecumenical delegation. Focus on family life, migration and Brexit

In Bratislava, yesterday, an ecumenical delegation of European Churches met Ivan Korčok, minister of European affairs of the Slovakian Government, which since July 1st has taken over the presidency of the EU Council. News of such meeting, which is regularly held every time a new presidency settles in, has been relayed today in a joint notice of the Commission of European Bishops Conferences (Comece) and the Conference of European Churches (Cec), listing the items on the agenda: “the state of the EU” in the after-Brexit, the lasting refugee and migrant crisis, including the reform of the Dublin regulations, development and peace policies, support to families “insofar as under the remit of the EU”. Hon. Korčok stated he appreciates the “efforts made by the Churches in the public sphere and in trying to find solutions in the interest of all European society” and said: “Many of the problems the EU has to face today are not the result of a failure in the common project”. “In our talks, we could express the belief that taking care of family life could become one of the EU’s key priorities”, pointed out the auxiliary bishop of Bratislava, mgr. Jozef Haľko, after the meeting, while the secretary general of Cec, Heikki Huttunen, said he is comforted by the “firm pro-European message of the Slovakian presidency”: differences of opinion between the EU governments “must be discussed, not exacerbated or made a drama of”.
