Germany: spiritual and recreational summer experiences – German dioceses have a lot to offer

Holidays are a good time for making new experiences and broadening one’s horizons, and rest can be conducive to reflection. The tourism chaplaincies of the German Church have a wide range of offers, also not related to church institutions. There are, for instance, 29 “Autobahnkapellen” located along the German highway network. The most famous one, with over 400,000 visitors a year, is the chaplaincy of the Archdiocese of Freiburg at the Baden-Baden junction. Those travelling by car know they can stop there and enjoy a bit of rest, not just with a coffee, but also by accessing youth club services and religious celebrations which are often ecumenical. On Lake Constance, there is a special ecumenical offer: spiritual assistance and meditations on the lake on the “Großherzog Ludwig” motorboat with trips throughout the whole summer for those who want to enjoy the lake as a source of energy and peace. In the Black Forest, there is a network of ecumenical organisations providing worship assistance and life coaching to tourists in a natural environment. The “Church in the Black Forest National Park” provides special entertainment for children and youth groups. And every Sunday, an ecumenical prayer with Taizé songs is held at the Church of the Transfiguration in Feldberg at 5.30pm. Ecumenism is at the centre of the “Ecumenical Deckchair” initiative launched by the Diocese of Osnabrück, with 25 Catholic and Protestant chaplains available to meet the tourists on the beaches of East Frisia and of the North Sea islands.
