Portugal: six bishops at the WYD in Cracow. “We want to listen to the young”

The National Department for Youth Pastoral Care (Dnpj) announced the names of the six Portuguese prelates who will be taking part in the forthcoming World Youth Day in Cracow, due from 26th to 31st July. They are the auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, monsignor Joaquim Mendes, who will lead the Portuguese delegation as a member of the Bishops Committee for Lay People and Family Life; mgr. Manuel Felício, bishop of Guarda; mgr. José Cordeiro, bishop of Bragança-Miranda; the holder of the diocese of Coimbra, mgr. Virgílio Antunes; the other auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, mgr. Nuno Brás; and, lastly, mgr. António Francisco dos Santos, bishop of Porto. “Each one, on every day of the WYD, will make a speech to the young about a mercy-related topic”, in tune with the spirit of the event: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy”. The six prelates expressed their joy for being able to take the Portuguese boys and girls and confirmed their will to be close to them, so as to listen and learn: “We want to understand the real life of young people. What are their aspirations, their problems, their limits, to get to know them better and be able to cope with everyday life with them. We must also try to understand how young people live in different countries and in different circumstances”, stated mgr. Joaquim Mendes.
