Austria: Card. Schönborn (Vienna), “Our freedom has solid and lasting foundations”

“We have to be grateful for we have free and secret elections, in Austria, and judges of the Supreme Court protecting the right of vote”: this statement by Archbishop of Vienna and President of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference Cardinal Christoph Schönborn emphasises the decision of the Austrian Constitutional Court to abolish the recent election of the Federal President. The Constitutional Court examined accusations of vote rigging and errors in the count of the second ballot last 22 May, in a quick way and through public hearing: today, it decided to cancel the election of Alexander Van der Bellen to the highest Austrian office. “It is an undeniable fact that the whole decision process was a remarkable sign of life for our democracy and the rule of law”, said Schoenborn through a declaration to the Catholic press agency Kathpress. “Now, if we are asked to choose again, we won’t have to vote with triumphal arrogance or furious attitude; on the other hand, we should be aware that our freedom has solid and lasting foundations”, pointed out the Archbishop of Vienna, currently in Belorussia as papal legate of Pope Francis at the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Archdiocese of Minsk-Mohilev.
