Brexit: Bishops in Northern Ireland, “Each individual vote counts”

On 23 June, even people in Northern Ireland will say whether they want the UK to remain part of the EU or leave. “Each individual vote counts”, and the final decision will have “effects likely to be felt for generations to come”, a statement from the five Irish Bishops whose dioceses are in the UK reads. Although these are “matters of prudential judgment for individuals”, the Bishops recalled that there is a link “between the core values of Catholic social teaching and the founding vision of the European Union”. This is reflected in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and in the work of the institutions aimed at ensuring that “the EU provides individual member states with a valuable mechanism of international influence” in support of the global common good. “In Northern Ireland, the support of the European Union in the quest for peace and reconciliation has been evident in many ways”, the Bishops remarked, and this benefit cannot be reduced to an economic calculation. “Human rights considerations need to be at the heart of our approach to European cooperation today so that the Union continues to contribute to social justice, social cohesion and equality”. Then the Bishops went on to exhort voters to participate in the referendum as it is “a valuable opportunity to ask ourselves how well the European Union is living up to these values today and what we need to do as citizens to ensure that this framework for cooperation continues to guide nations” towards the common good.
