Pope Francis: Mass for priests’ Jubilee, the priest’s heart is not “shaky” but “pierced and firm in the Lord”

“In front of Jesus’s heart, the fundamental question of our priestly life comes up: what is my heart aimed at?”. This question was asked by Pope Francis during the Mass he officiated this morning on the parvis of the Vatican Basilica to celebrate the Priests’ and Seminarians’ Jubilee. “We, as priests – he adds, off the cuff –, must ask ourselves, every day, every week: what is my heart aimed at?”. The ministry, the Pope explains, “is often full of multiple initiatives, which expose it on many sides: from catechesis to liturgy, to charity, pastoral efforts and even administrative efforts. Amidst so many jobs, the question remains: where is my heart fixed on, what does it aim at, what is the treasure it is looking for? Because – Jesus says – ‘where your treasure is, there your heart will be’”. “But there are weaknesses in all of us – Francis comments, off the cuff – even sins, but we go deep down, where there’s the root, that treasure that takes us away from the Lord”. Two are, according to the Pope, “the irreplaceable treasures” of Jesus’ Heart: “The Father and us. His days were spent praying His Father and meeting people. The heart of Christ the Shepherd too knows two directions only: the Lord and people”. The priest’s heart, Francis spells out, “is a heart pierced through by the Lord’s love; that’s why it no longer looks at itself, it shouldn’t be looking at itself, but it looks at God and its brothers. It is no longer ‘a shaky heart’, which lets itself be attracted by the latest ideas or that is all over the place, looking for popularity and petty successes; it is instead a heart that is firm in the Lord, gripped by the Holy Spirit, open and helpful with its brothers”. To help “our heart burn with the charity of Jesus the Good Shepherd, we can train ourselves to embrace three actions, which today’s Readings suggest us: looking for, including, and rejoicing”.
