Pope Francis: Mass for Priests’ Jubilee, “The Good Shepherd gets his hands dirty, he wants no gloves”

Christ’s priest “is a man who knows how to include”, the Good Shepherd gets his hands dirty, he wants no gloves”. This picture is drawn by Pope Francis, during the Mass that he officiated, and that is still going on, on the parvis of St Peter’s Basilica for the Priests’ and Seminarians’ Jubilee. “Including”, he explains, is the second action inspired by the day’s readings. “Christ loves and knows His sheep, for them He gives His life, and none of them is alien to Him. His flock is His family and His life. He is not a leader feared by the sheep, he is the shepherd who walks with them and calls them by name” and who “wishes to gather the sheep that still do not stay with Him”. Likewise, “Christ’s priest: he is the Anointed for the people not to choose His own plans but to be close to the real people that God, through the Church, entrusted Him with. No one is left out of His heart, of His prayers or of His smile. With a loving look and a fatherly heart, He welcomes, includes and, when He must correct someone, it is always to bring them closer; He despises no one, but for everyone He is willing to get His hands dirty”. “The Good Shepherd – the Pope adds, off the cuff – wants no gloves”. The minister of the communion “that He celebrates and experiences, He excepts no greetings or compliments from people, but He is the first to offer His hand, rejecting gossip, judgements and poisons. He patiently listens to people’s problems and supports people’s steps, bestowing God’s forgiveness on them with generous compassion. He does not scold those who leave or lose the way, but He is always ready to bring people back in and to settle rows”. “He is a man – he finishes, off the cuff – who knows who to include”.
